UFC 78 Preview

I figured that with the card at UFC 78 being what it is, the UFC could use all the publicity it can get... even if its a blog on The Neutral Site. The Main Event is being billed as the first ever meeting between two winners of The Ultimate Fighter reality show (Rashad Evans vs. Michael Bisping). Let me be the first to say, who cares? This card has "free on SpikeTV" written all over it. There could be some very entertaining fights, but simply put, the event is not worth 40 dollars. I reccomend getting out to a sportsbar and watching it there.

Rashad Evans (-260) vs. Michael Bisping (+200)
The main event of the evening... ::sigh:: Both men are undersized for 205, Bisping probably moreso. Evans comes in off a draw with Tito Ortiz, while Bisping comes in off a very controversial win over Matt Hamill. As far as I'm concerned, Bisping lost his last fight. The wrestler Hamill made Bisping look silly on his feet. Evans has the same wrestling background, but is much more well-rounded than Hamill. Now Evans goes from Ortiz, one of the biggest 205 pounders in the UFC, to Bisping, probably one of the smallest. I don't think he'll struggle much, but we may see Evans lay and pray his way to the win. EVANS via unanimous decision.

Houston Alexander (-180) vs. Thiago Silva (+150)
Both guys like to bang, and I really do like Thiago Silva. But Alexander has just looked unbeatable in his two wins over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara. There's really no stylistic breakdown here; these two are just going to punch until one falls down. But until someone beats him, or even takes him to a second round, I can't pick against the heavy hands of Houston Alexander. ALEXANDER via first round TKO.

Karo Parisyan (-365) vs. Ryo Chonan (+285)
Chonan, another import from PRIDE, steps into the Octagon and gets tested immediately. A lot of people don't like Karo Parisyan the person, but as far as I'm concerned, he is one of the top 3 most exciting fighters to watch in any division of the UFC. Chonan is a very good fighter, with recent losses to such top 5 talent such as Paulo Filho and Dan Henderson. He even holds a victory over one Anderson Silva, perhaps you've heard of him. I think this match will be a lot closer than the odds indicate, plus I still like the favorite. PARISYAN via split decision.

Frank Edgar (-120) vs. Spencer Fisher (-110)
The most evenly matched bout on the card, this one is really coin flip. Plus, is there anything more fun than watching two lightweights that just want to duke it out? Spence Fisher is a hard hitter, but personally, I think he may be a little over-rated. He has losses to Sam Stout and Hermes Franca in his last 5 fights, and wins over Matt Wiman and Dan Lauzon don't really make up for them. Edgar on the other hand is often overlooked. Fight-of-the-night King Tyson Griffin gets a lot of attention, but people forget that Edgar beat him. A very close fight, but I think Edgar stays undefeated. EDGAR via second round TKO

Michigan - Ohio State

Just about thirteen minutes to go in this game, and it's not an easy game to watch. It's a cold, rainy, defensive struggle. If not for a singular letdown on defense by the Wolverines, this is still a 7-3 game.

But I'm really having problems with Chad Henne. I know he's a great quarterback, and is showing guts playing with the shoulder injury, but he just doesn't have it today. I'm not sure if its the shoulder or not, but right now he's just not giving his team a chance to win. He's overthrowing the ball, throwing behind receivers, and fumbling. I'm not going to argue that Ryan Mallett is a better overall quarterback, but at least he made some plays last week against Wisconsin. It's really a tough spot for Lloyd Carr though. How do you tell a senior playing in his last game ever, against Ohio State no less, that he has to take a seat? He better find a way though. Michigan just got the ball back, still down two scores. It's now or never.
